For a Masters course, content mastery will be approached with a big picture idea. Each course will have a set of Ragas, selected on the basis of a general principle. It is expected that the student analyses the principle and hypothesizes on the link of the Ragas to this principle, based on the in depth study of the nature of each Raga. Independent learning by the student with guided listening will be the prominent pedagogy. The four Ragas chosen in this course HV401 are ones in which both the Prakrit and Vikrit forms of the same note are present. The student could explore the effect of this arrangement of notes on the mood created as well as the kind of treatment that is afforded. The Ragas being introduced are Shuddh Sarang, Jog and Marubihag. Raga Lalit is reviewed here. Theory – Prakrit and Vikrit Swaras, the relationship of these Swara Prayogas with the overall expression of the Raga, Swaras and Rasas as explained in the Natya Shastra. Sarang ke Prakar.
