Academic Policies

  • Course progression and requirements

Shankar Mahadevan Academy currently offers certificate programs in both Carnatic and Hindustani classical vocal styles as well as individual courses in non-classical styles.
Hindi movie and devotional song courses are open to new and existing students and do not require prior experience or fulfil the pre-requisite assessment. Carnatic and Hindustani certificate programs have a defined, structured curriculum with three levels:

    • Beginner
    • Intermediate
    • Advanced
After completing the course within a level with a passing grade, students receive an e-certificate and advance to the next course.

    Courses offered for virtual classes:

    Courses Beginner Intermediate Advanced
    Carnatic CVOC101, 102, 103, 104, 105 CVOC201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206 CVOC301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306
    Hindustani HVOC101, 102, 103, 104 HVOC201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206 HVOC301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306

Students who are willing to enrol into the Academy are counselled and assessed by the curriculum head. The student is then advised to join the particular level depending on his/her singing capability and their prior singing experience. Students can enrol and participate in more than one genre certificate program simultaneously.

  • Grading policy for certificate programs
Students in certificate programs are graded based on their attendance and class participation, assignments and final assessments. Each student's cumulative GPA will be based on an average of course grades according to the following scale:

    Average course grade Cumulative GPA
    Grade Percent
    A 90-100 4.0
    B 80-89 3.0
    C 70-79 2.0
    D 60-69 1.0
    F 0-59 0.0
    W Withdrawal N/A

Students receiving an F or 0-59 in any course must retake that course and receive a passing grade of D/60-69 or higher in order to progress to the next course in the program. Full tuition must be paid for any course that needs to be retaken. Only the highest grade for a course will be used to compute the cumulative GPA.

If a student believes their grade does not accurately reflect their performance, they should first contact their teacher to discuss. If they are unable to resolve the issue with their teacher, students can send an email to support@shankarmahadevanacademy.com, and should include their name, course, teacher, and the reason they feel the grade is incorrect. Grade disputes must be received within one week of course completion.

  • Attendance policy

Participation in virtual classes is an essential part of courses at the Academy, and lack of attendance can cause a student to fall behind. This can impact the experience of both the student as well as other students in the class. For these reasons, prompt and regular attendance in virtual classes is required, and teachers may issue a failing grade for lack of participation. If you plan to be away, please notify support (support@shankarmahadevanacademy.com) and your teacher, and make best efforts to stay current by reviewing and practicing with materials in the OM Book, reviewing recordings of the virtual classes you missed, and completing any assignments prior to the next virtual class.

Students wishing to officially withdraw from a course should follow the procedure for withdrawal outlined in this document.

At the discretion of the Academy, an extension or leave of absence for extenuating circumstances may be granted. Such requests should be made in writing to support@shankarmahadevanacademy.com. Requests for a leave of absence due to medical reasons must include a written note signed by a doctor verifying that the student cannot complete the course for medical reasons.

Inactive students who wish to become active again can send an email to the support@shankarmahadevanacademy.com. They will be required to pay the course prices currently in effect.
