This course HV108 focuses on navigating from one Raga to another with ease. This is done with the practice of a variety of Swara patterns in each Raga and the Swar Vistar. The student creates a composition of a Sargam geet by taking two Ragas. 

Raga Kafi is practiced with the addition of Taan patterns. The student has the option of learning a Tarana in Raga Kafi. Raga Alhaiya Bilaval is a nuanced Raga that is introduced with a Chhota Khayal.An Abhang is included for learning with details about forms like Abhang, Kirtan, Kirtane.

 The Thaat system and associated terms are discussed in this course

Objectives

 

  • To practice singing the Aaroh Avaroh of different Ragas in succession to develop the skill of switching from one Raga to another smoothly
  • To create sing Alankar a variety of patterns of the Ragas learnt 
  • To listen to Swara phrases or Aalap and identify the Raga in which it is sung
  • To articulate the mood created by each of the Ragas while performing
  • To explore the Ragas further, practice singing Swar Vistar in the Ragas learnt 
  • To study the Raga characteristics of every Raga and present it in the form of a grid or document
  • To sing different Swara patterns in Ragas Kafi and Alhaiya Bilaval
  • To compose and sing Swar Vistar in Alhaiya Bilaval and Kafi
  • To learn a Chhota Khayal in Raga Alhaiya Bilaval with Aalap and Taan within the Taal structure
  • Learn a Tarana in Raga Kafi (Optional)
  • To review and practice Raga Kafi Chhota Khayal with Aalap and Taan 
  • To study the theory of Thaat system of classification of Ragas including the concept of Ashray Ragas and Janya Ragas
  • To compose Sargamgeet using two Ragas, review the two Ragas chosen

 

The student should have completed HV107 at the academy or the student should be able to: 

  • Create and sing Alankar patterns in Shuddh Swar Saptak and the Raga scales
  • Perform Chhota Khayal with self-created Aalap and Taan in at least 6 Ragas 
  • Explain the Raga Characteristics and sing Swara Vistar in Ragas learnt
  • Sing a Tarana in any Raga
  • Compose and present a Geet, Swar Maalika, Tarana and Lakshangeet 
  • Recite Teentaal, Rupak, Ektaal and Jhaptaal fluently 
  • Present a Bhajan 
  • Render a Dhrupad composition with Dugun and Chougun

At the completion of HV108, the student will be able to:

  • Sing the Aaroh Avaroh in succession along with Alankar patterns of the Ragas practiced, thus developing the skill of switching from one Raga to another fluently 
  • Listen to an Aalap and identify the Raga in which it is sung
  • Express the mood created by each of these Ragas while performing and Sing Swar Vistar
  • Create a grid for every Raga and fill in the Raga characteristics
  • Sing patterns in Ragas Kafi and Alhaiya Bilaval
  • Perform complete Chhota Khayal with Swar Vistar, in Raga Alhaiya Bilaval
  • Sing a Tarana in Raga Kafi
  • Perform Raga Kafi Chhota Khayal with Aalap and Taan
