This course is ideal for students looking to take their first steps into the world of Carnatic Music.Entry level foundation course for students who are ready to start right at the beginning and do not have any prior experience learning Indian/Carnatic music, covering the lessons/exercises to understandind the building blocks of music, which are the 7 notes.This course will help students understand the concept of Pitch (shruthi) and position of notes and also help in being able to identify them. To learn basic Swara patterns (saralivarisais) and also the Ragam Shankarabharanam along with its scale (arohana and avarohana).Aakara practice and creative swara exrcises will also be explored. This course also teaches the student two short Nottu Swarams (small songs) which are compositions of Sri Muthu Swamy Dikshitar.

Duration: 12 weeks, one 45 mins lesson per week

Objectives

  • Learn about the tanpura and how it is used pitch recognition 
  • Learn Sarali varisais in Shankarabharana.
  • Attain knowledge of the history of Indian/Carnatic music.
  • Understand the terminologies used in Carnatic musical parlance 
  • Gain familiarity with the basic seven notes.
  • Attain perfection of the Svaras through the prescribed exercises
  • Traverse comfortably in a single octave, mastering singing of all notes
  • Be motivated to pursue the next level of learning

By the end of this course, students will

  • Sing any one Nottu Swaram with perfection
