Shankar Mahadevan Academy in association with Naman Sajan Piya - an Archive to Alive project presents
the Sajan Piya Contest.
Participate in this vocal contest and win a chance to sing to the maestro Shankar Mahadevan and the guru Vidushi Lalith J Rao! The winning rendition would also be recorded and published on the Shankar Mahadevan Academy website.

Steps to Participate

Step 1 - Go to namansajanpiya.com and learn any of the 68 compositions by Ustad Khadim Hussain rendered by the disciples of Vidushi Lalith J Rao.  

Step 2 - You can listen to all 68 compositions on the  Listen to Learn ( Android  |  iOS )  App for free. Download all 68 compositions here.

Step 3 - Choose any one composition - the course material is free for self-study. You may sign up for classes if you wish to learn from our instructors. Participant has to present an introductory Alap, the Bandhish - Sthayi and Antara, and improvisation within the Bandish based on the Raga. 

Step 4 - Upload your entry on the Naman Sajan Piya Contest Page before February 28th, 2019 5:00 PM IST. **

Terms and Conditions

  1. There are two categories of participation
    • Below 13 years of age as on Nov 1, 2018
    • Above 13 years
  2. In the above 13 years category singers who are direct disciples of the performers on the Naman Sajan Piya website are NOT allowed to submit entries for this contest. 
  3.  A jury consisting of SMA teachers and the Naman Sajan Piya performers will evaluate each entry. The evaluation rubric indicates the criteria with levels of achievement on which the rendition will be evaluated.
  4. Only renditions of Sajan Piya's Composition will be considered as valid entries for the contest, submission of any other songs/composition will not qualify for evaluation
  5. Contestant should present an introductory Alap, the Bandhish - Sthayi and Antara, and improvisation within the Bandhish based on the Raga. 
  6. The rendition should be accompanied by tanpura and tabla. Live accompaniment or electronic are allowed. 
  7. The maximum duration of the rendition should not exceed 20 minutes.
  8. File size should not exceed 15MB. Acceptable file format: mp3, m4a, wma, amr, wav.
  9. You can upload/record only a single rendition of your song for feedback. Please ensure that you upload the correct file. No requests for changing the file that is submitted initially will be entertained.
  10. Each submission gives you access to feedback for one rendition only. Multiple songs will be considered as separate entries and the contest enrollment will be per entry.
  11. The uploaded content will not be returned to the student and will be archived. The Academy reserves the right to use the rendition as it deems fit.
