Contest - Celebrating Mira Bai and Tyagaraja
The Shankar Mahadevan Academy's mission is Joy of Music. In the first of this series, the Academy brings to you the Hare Rama Hare Krishna contest.  Hare Rama for the divine composer and Rama devotee Tyagaraja, and Hare Krishna for the lyrical mysticism of Mira Bai who devoted her life and love in the praise of Lord Krishna.
Celebrate the compositions of these two immortal poets and win a chance to sing live on stage with Shankar Mahadevan at the Shankar Mahadevan Academy's annual global meet
Participating in this contest is easy.
  • Read the Contest Highlights and Terms & Conditions for participation
  • Enroll for the contest by filling up the registration form
  • Upload a copy of your recording in the acceptable file formats given below and give us a flavour of your singing
  • All participants get a score and feedback from renowned experts in the field of music, which can give them the right pointers to develop their inborn talent.

Winning Prizes (Terms & Conditions apply):

  • Grand winner of the contest gets:
    • An entry to sing solo in SANGAM 2015 to Shankar Mahadevan and the audience
    • Two free Instructor Led full courses (6 months) of learning from the academy in either carnatic or hindustani worth 24000 INR 
    • A certificate with Shankar’s Signature.
  • 1st and 2nd runner up gets:
    • Free entry to SANGAM 2015,
    • A self-study course from SMA, “HMS Super pack” worth 4500 INR
    • A certificate with Shankar’s Signature.
  • Top 10 participants will get a certificate with Shankar’s signature 
  • Top 3 participants will get free entry to SANGAM 2015

Contest Highlights

  • Audition Start Date: 4th December, 2014
  • Audition End date: 18th March, 2015 (By 11:00 PM IST.)
  • Audition Results: 02 April, 2015
  • Participant needs to sing an original composition of Mira Bai or Tyagaraja.
  • Results of the contest will be communicated by email and phone to winners by 2nd of April.


Evaluations will be based on the following 10 parameters:

2 Range of voice 10
3 Singing in pitch 10
4 Singing in tune 10
5 Maintaining Rhythm 10
6 Pronunciation of lyrics 10
7 Mood and Expression 10
8 Breath control 10
9 Creativity - Improvisation 10
10 Overall impact – winning component 10

Terms & Conditions

  • No age limit
  • Instruments which can be used are Tanpura (Instrument, Electronic, App), Tabla (Instrument, Taalmala, App) and Manjira. Do not use Harmonium or Keyboard
  • Grand winner will be declared only if s/he scores more than 95%
  • You can upload/record only a single rendition of your song for the contest. Please ensure that you upload the correct file. 
  • The maximum duration of the rendition should not exceed 6 minutes.
  • File size should not exceed 15MB
  • Acceptable file format: mp3, wma, m4a, amr
  • The uploaded content will not be returned to the student and will be archived. The Academy reserves the right to use the rendition as it deems fit.
  • Anybody from anywhere in the world can apply. The Academy will not be liable for any travel, travel related issues or damages arising out of travel.
