In this course apart from more Varnams and Krtis, the student also gets to learn compositions that belong to classical dance and music. Tillanas and Javalis are dance forms as well as popular concert items in music. The Theory in this course gives us the Biographies of eminent composers, Descriptions of important dance forms and Raga Lakshanas.

Objectives

  • Learning complicated Varnams will help in laying a very strong foundation for all advanced learning particularly in the creative aspects of music and also help in getting a firm grip over rhythmical aspects. 
  • Learning Krtis of different composers help students to understand the style of each composer. Varnams and Krtis help the student understand the essence of the Raga, its special phrases and its beauty. The student needs to increase his repertoire of Krtis constantly. 
  • The student is introduced to new types of compositions that are sung in the tail end of the concerts. Tillanas, Javalis etc are useful compositions to understand the kind of music that is sung for dance. The structure of the compositions used in dance is clearly understood in terms of lyrics and their Raga bhava.
  • Dance Forms and their study gives us a deep understanding of the different Dance forms and their music.The Tillana is a very interesting form which is sung in the tail end of concerts. Javalis are forms belonging to the Dance form but are popular in music concerts also. Javalis present the Raga features in a nutshell and help the student in the understanding of the Raga.
  • Biographies of  great composers, post the Musical Trinity period help us know their invaluable contribution to the Carnatic music world.
  • Raga Lakshanas give details of the Raga, the svaras it takes, the special phrases that are characteristic of the Raga, popular compositions in the Raga are all listed to get a better understanding of the Ragas.
