First course in the intermediate programme, where student enters the realm of serious learning after acquiring a strong foundation in the basics of music. Covers Varnams, one of the most important forms, as well as Keertanas of great composers. The Theory comprises of Biographies of eminent composers, the form Varnam and the difference between Keertana and Krti as two important forms.

Objectives

  • Learning Varnams will help in laying a very strong foundation for all advanced learning particularly in the creative aspects of music.Varnams are very significant forms and the last in the realm of Abhyasa Ganam. The Svara passages in the Varnams enable the student to understand the structure of each raga and the possible combinations of Svara patterns that can be sung. 
  • Keerthanas are forerunners of the form Krti and they help in understanding the structure of a musical composition and form the basis for learning the most celebrated form in concerts – the Krti. 
  • Biographies of great composers throw light on their lives and their compositions.
  • The importance of the Varnam is highlighted. 
  • Keertana and Krti are two different forms which need to be understood in terms of their structure.
