The Ragas chosen for this course are variants of one parent Raga – Bilaval. With the addition of shades of other Ragas, new personalities have emerged in the forms of Ragas Devgiri Bilaval, Kukubh Bilaval, Yamani Bilaval . In this course you will explore the effect of these shades on the parent Raga Bilaval(Shuddha Kalyan and Kalyan to generate Devgiri, Yaman to get Yamani and Jaijaivanti to produce Kukubh) and the nuances that separate each Raga from the other in order to maintain a distinctive character and identity for each. All three Ragas are morning melodies and although the shades introduced into Bilaval, which is a morning Raga, are shades of evening and night Ragas, the end effect is a morning Raga persona. This principle will also be studied through these three Ragas. The comparative study of these Ragas rendered in different Gharanas, or Houses of music, will elucidate the study of these distinct Prakars or variations of Raga Bilaval. Theory – Gharana traditions, Bilaval Prakars, The Shuddh Swar Saptak of ancient times, Shrutis and placement of Shuddh Swaras among the 22 Shrutis
