This course will deal with three varieties of Malhar, the Raga family associated with the life giving season in India, the monsoons. Raga in this family is Miya ki Malhar and is attributed to Miya Tansen. In addition, this course will contain Goud Malhar and Sur Malhar. Theory – includes the study of Malhar Raganga and the way it is applied in different Prakars of Malhar. Relationship between the Swaras and Rasas as explained in the Natyashastra, this topic dealt with greater depth here. The lyrical content of the Bandishes in Malhar and their association to the mood created by the Raga. Origin and evolution of Dhrupad Aalap style.

Objectives

  • To sing Swar Aalap in the Ragas Miyan Malhar, Gaud malhar and Sur Malhar with clarity in Raga Roop. 
  • To learn a Bada Khayal with development in Miyan Malhar
  • To learn a Dhrupad in Raga Miyanmalhar with Upaj and the Prarambhik Nom Tom Aalap
  • To learn a Bada Khayal in Gaud Malhar with Badhat and Taan
  • To learn a Bada Khayal in Sur Malhar with Badhat and Taan
  • To learn Chhota Khayals with development in Ragas Miyan Malhar, Gaudmalhar and Sur Malhar
  • To prepare a paper on Malhar Anga and the Bandishes in Raga Malhar

 Learning Outcomes

The student is able to

  • Present Raga Miya Malhar and Raga Goud Malhar for 30 minutes
  • Present Raga Miya Malhar in the Dhrupad style for 20 minutes
  • Present Chhota Khayals in all the three Ragas for about 15 minutes
  • Present the self composed Chhota Khayal in Raga Miya Malhar
  • Identify the Malhar Ang in the different Prakars of Malhar, compare and distinguish these Ragas
  • Present a paper on the Malhar Anga and the Bandishes contributing to the expressions of Malhar

The student has completed HV401 at the academy OR the student has learnt Hindustani Vocal for above 8 years. The student needs to fulfill the pre requisites set by the academy.
